Airbnb turnover cleaning in three hours: a peak-season handover system

Úklid Airbnb za tři hodiny mezi hosty

Three hours is a normal gap between bookings in Prague. It is also easy to lose. Twenty minutes disappear when a guest leaves late. Another ten go on a blocked shower drain, and suddenly the cleaner is taking proof photos while the next guest is outside. Good Airbnb turnover cleaning is less about working at panic speed and more about running the same handover every time.

What has to happen between check-out and the next arrival

Start with one fact: has the guest left? A calendar that says 10:00 is not confirmation. The host checks the booking or contacts the guest, the cleaner confirms entry, then sends a first status within ten minutes.

I use two labels. “Standard turnover” means used linen, ordinary mess and no obvious damage. “Exceptional condition” covers smoke, a stained mattress, party debris, broken furniture or anything else that threatens the schedule. The cleaner should not spend half an hour silently trying to rescue a sofa. The host needs the news early enough to authorise help or deal with a damage claim.

Walk through the flat before cleaning. Open windows, switch on every light and notice the smell. Check the oven, fridge, shower, beds and bins. Photograph damage and put lost property somewhere safe. Strip the beds and move used linen into a closed bag.

This opening check once saved a Vinohrady job that looked simple at the door. A greasy tray was hidden in the oven and wet towels had been left inside the washing machine. Both jobs were manageable at 10:10. They would have been a nasty discovery at 12:40.

A three-hour schedule without walking the same route twice

Use the clock as a guide, not as an excuse to cut hygiene. This plan fits a studio or compact one-bedroom apartment. More than four beds usually means more time or a second cleaner.

0:00–0:20 — check, air and remove linen

Confirm arrival. Record anything unusual. Put used towels and bedding straight into the dirty-linen bag, leaving clean sets sealed in their box. If laundry is washed on site, start it now. Do not assume sheets will air-dry during one turnover in an older Prague building.

0:20–1:20 — bathroom and kitchen

Put product on the shower, basin and toilet, then leave it for the correct contact time. While it works, empty the dishwasher, clean the hob and inspect the fridge. Return to the bathroom rather than wiping the product off too soon.

Order matters. Dust before making the bed. Carry rubbish out before mopping the hall. Restock bulky items before finishing the floors. These small decisions stop a cleaner from crossing the same room again and again.

1:20–2:25 — bed, living area and floors

Wipe from high surfaces down, test bedside lights, make the bed and reset moved furniture. Vacuum under the bed, not only around the visible edges. Floors are last. With two people, split the bathroom and kitchen from the bedroom and linen work. Name one person who will perform the final check.

2:25–3:00 — buffer and handover

Keep the final 35 minutes. They cover restocking, photographs, appliance checks and the minor fault nobody could predict. If every minute is allocated to scrubbing, a missing toilet roll becomes an emergency trip to a Žabka.

The control standard that protects the host's rating

A guest's first minute is blunt. The apartment smells fresh or it does not. The bed looks clean or a hair is visible on the white sheet. A mark on the bathroom mirror can outweigh several shelves that were cleaned perfectly.

Write checks that can be seen. Replace “bathroom done” with: no hair in the shower or basin, dry taps without marks, clear drain, filled soap and the correct towel count. Check inside the microwave and kettle. Open the cutlery drawer. Look under the bed and test the lamps.

Before leaving, I would step outside and enter again as a guest. Sit on the edge of the bed for a moment. A different viewpoint often reveals dust on the bedside table or a crumb missed while working from above.

Separate cleaning mistakes from maintenance. A mirror streak is fixed now. A loose tap, damaged blind or slow drain is photographed and reported. The cleaner tests what is safe to test, but does not invent a repair without tools or permission.

Photo records and one useful handover message

For a small apartment, eight to twelve photographs are normally enough. Take the entrance view of each room from the same position, then the made bed, bathroom, kitchen surface, open fridge, supplies and secured key box.

A damaged item needs a close detail and a wider photograph showing its location. Add a time and a plain description: “Crack on left fridge shelf, found 11:18; fridge still cooling.” Lost passports and devices go to the agreed secure place. Do not expose personal details in a general chat.

One report can record arrival and finish times, standard or exceptional condition, remaining clean linen, supplies to buy, faults, lost property and a link to photographs. That is much better than fifteen messages arriving while the cleaner is trying to finish.

Linen, supplies and keys belong to the turnover

Many same-day turnover cleaning problems start outside the cleaning bucket. There is no spare pillowcase, the soap is empty or nobody knows where the keys went.

Keep three full linen sets per bed: one in the apartment, one clean in storage and one at the laundry. In the busiest summer weeks, a fourth set is sensible when washing happens off site. Dirty textiles go into closed bags. Clean linen stays in labelled boxes and never shares the sorting surface.

Give each consumable a reorder level. For example, a report flags stock below eight toilet rolls, two soap refills or ten dishwasher tablets. Waiting until the final item is used saves no money if someone then drives across Prague with one replacement.

Treat keys with the same discipline. Record who holds the emergency copy and when a lockbox code changes. Do not post a live guest code in an open team group or show it in a handover photo. Disable temporary access after the booking.

A backup plan for late departures and cleaner cancellations

Agree on trigger times before peak season. If departure is not confirmed ten minutes after check-out, the host contacts the guest. At 30 minutes, the host activates the agreed option: another cleaner, an external linen run or a later entry time for the incoming guest.

You can drop decorative towel folds and perfect cushion styling when time is lost. You cannot drop toilet and shower hygiene, fresh bedding, kitchen contact surfaces, rubbish removal, odour checks or the final walkthrough.

The contact sheet should name the main cleaner, substitute, host, building contact, laundry and maintenance person. It should also say who can approve extra time or cost. For a 15:00 arrival, a cleaner cancellation needs to be reported in the morning, not at the planned start time.

When requesting regular short-term rental cleaning, include the layout, bed count, arrival window, turnover frequency, laundry arrangement, lift and parking access, supply storage, key method, photo requirements and the rule for exceptional mess. A cleaner can then reserve enough capacity and quote honestly.
