Cleaning before holiday guests: November and arrival day

Úklid před návštěvou ve dvou fázích

Cleaning before holiday guests does not have to mean scrubbing the whole flat again in December. A two-stage plan is easier: do the work that lasts in November, then revisit only the surfaces guests will use or notice when they arrive. In a Prague apartment, that usually means the entrance, toilet, bathroom, kitchen worktop and somewhere to sit or sleep. The cupboard behind a closed door can wait.

Follow the guest's route, not the floor plan

When I plan a pre-visit clean, I picture the guest's first ten minutes. They ring the bell, take off a wet coat, leave their shoes somewhere, wash their hands and sit down. Overnight guests add a shower and a bed to that route. This gives you a sharper list than any room-by-room Christmas cleaning plan.

This route helps you prepare home for overnight guests without cleaning every private room.

I split the home into three kinds of space. The used areas must work and be hygienically clean: entrance, toilet, basin, shower, table, sofa and guest bed. Visible areas need to look settled, not clinically perfect. Think hallway floor, mirror, kitchen fronts and coffee table. Private areas such as a study, wardrobe or storage room can stay behind a closed door.

The visit itself changes the priorities. Friends coming for mulled wine do not need freshly laundered bed linen. Parents staying for a weekend do. A family with a toddler needs a clear patch of floor and cleaning products moved out of reach. Someone arriving from Brno by train may care more about a place for a suitcase and a socket beside the bed.

One Vinohrady couple I worked with spent three hours arranging books before their parents arrived. The shelves looked beautiful. The hallway, however, had no free hanger, so four winter coats ended up on a dining chair. Nothing terrible happened. It was simply a neat reminder that preparing a home for overnight guests starts with what they will actually do there.

Do the jobs that last in November

November is for cleaning that will still count at Christmas. Remove limescale from the shower screen, scrub discoloured grout, clear slow drains and clean behind the laundry basket. In a windowless panelák bathroom, check the extractor grille. Dust mixed with moisture can create a stale smell that room spray only disguises.

Wash a mattress protector, guest throw or curtains if they genuinely need it. Store them only when completely dry. Pull out the guest towels and check them now. A musty towel discovered on 23 December is annoying, and one rushed wash may not fix it. This early check also catches the very ordinary problem of owning two bath towels for three people.

The November zone-by-zone Christmas cleaning plan is also the right time for small repairs. Tighten a loose toilet seat, replace a cracked shower hose, oil a squeaky door and test the lamp near the sofa bed. Each job takes minutes when you choose the timing. On arrival day, the same jobs feel like an ambush.

Look for the source of smells instead of adding fragrance. Clean the sink trap, wash the bath mat, wipe the bin and vacuum under the sofa. In a home with a dog, washing the pet bed can make more difference than shampooing the rug. Damp walls, mould or persistent drain smells are maintenance problems and deserve a proper fix.

Some tasks are poor November choices. Polishing the tap, leaving the basin spotless and mopping the main path through the flat will all be undone by normal life. Do the deep bathroom cleaning before guests now. Save the final shine for later.

Set up the household one week before

A week before arrival, think about capacity. Free a few coat hangers, make room for shoes and put down something that can take wet soles. In a compact flat in Karlín or Žižkov, moving your own jackets to the bedroom may be enough. Guests do not need an empty hallway. They need an obvious place to put a coat without knocking over three bags.

Check toilet paper, hand soap, a clean hand towel and a bin. Overnight guests also need a shelf or basket, a spare toothbrush and somewhere sensible to hang a damp bath towel. Hotel miniatures are optional. A hook that does not fall off the wall is far more useful.

The fridge does not need to resemble a showroom. Throw away expired food, wipe sticky shelves and clear one area for dishes or drinks that guests bring. If Christmas baking is also on the list, handle the pantry preparation before Christmas separately. Keep a useful stretch of kitchen counter free. Rearranged jars will not help. Sixty centimetres of clear worktop will.

Separate laundry, cooking and cleaning on your calendar. Do not leave sheets, bathroom towels and the tablecloth for one final wash. The drying rack will occupy the living room just when you need to open the sofa bed. A workable rhythm is less dramatic: guest linen first, shopping and food preparation the day before, short cleaning service last.

On arrival day, service the touchpoints

Allow 30 to 45 minutes. Air the flat with a short burst of cross-ventilation, check the toilet, wipe the basin and polish the mirror. Clean the handles at the entrance and bathroom. Go over the kitchen worktop, tap and dining table. Then vacuum or wipe only the dirt that is visible along the guest route.

A simple arrival-day order keeps the job contained:

  • remove spare shoes and bags from the hallway,
  • refill soap and toilet paper,
  • replace the hand towel,
  • wipe crumbs and fingerprints in the kitchen,
  • check the bed, lamp, socket and a glass for water.

Clean, dry bedding matters. Hotel styling does not. Open the sofa bed once before the evening, because discovering a storage box jammed underneath at 10 pm is not festive. Avoid strong pillow sprays as well; guests may be sensitive, and fresh air is the safer bet.

Do not scrub the grout, fridge interior, cupboards or windows again. If you dealt with them in November, they are still clean enough. A holiday guest cleaning checklist should remove the traces of the last day, not repeat a deep clean. Use the spare time for a shower, coffee or ten quiet minutes. A tired, irritated host changes the room more than one fingerprint on a door.

When to book help and how to define the job

A one-off professional clean is useful for physically demanding work or jobs that have been postponed: bathroom limescale and grout, grease around kitchen surfaces, dust above cabinets, the space beneath furniture or a thorough vacuum of upholstery. Paying someone to move decorations and reorganise drawers rarely helps the guest experience.

Give the cleaner the guest arrival date, size of the home and a short priority list. For example: “Two-room flat in Prague 7, guests arrive on 21 December. Please deep-clean the bathroom and kitchen, vacuum the sofa and wash the floors. Skip the windows and bedroom.” That brief helps the cleaner quote a realistic scope instead of guessing what “Christmas clean” means to you.

December appointments fill earlier than an ordinary week, so ask in November. Keep the division of work clear. The professional can handle the durable, strenuous jobs; you keep the quick touchpoint check for arrival day. You avoid paying for work that normal household use would immediately undo.

If you would like help in Prague, send Čistýkout a no-obligation cleaning enquiry with your preferred date, priority rooms and exclusions. The goal is not a home with every sign of life erased. It is a clean, workable place where guests can hang a coat, wash their hands and settle in without fuss.
