If you ask me how long does apartment cleaning take, I will not give you a single neat number and pretend it fits every home. A maintained apartment usually needs about 3 to 6 labour hours. A deep clean is more likely to take 8 to 16. The catch is that labour hours are not always the same as the time shown on your clock, and two 60 m² Prague flats can be entirely different jobs.
Labour hours are not the time spent in your home
Here is the bit I have seen trip people up. Every cleaner's time goes into the labour-hour total. Petra working alone from nine until one has done four labour hours. If Petra brings a colleague and they finish around eleven, the visit took two hours, yet the pair still supplied four hours of work. Same arithmetic, rather different plans for your morning.
The basic calculation is:
> labour hours ÷ number of cleaners = approximate visit length
Take a quote for 12 labour hours. One person needs most of a day, a pair about six hours and three cleaners roughly four. Allow some slack: three people cannot work efficiently in a tiny panelák bathroom.
When a quote says “six hours”, ask whether that means time in the flat or time added across a team. Check whether setup and rubbish removal count too.
A realistic range for each type of cleaning
These ranges are a useful starting point for a home occupied by one to three people. They are estimates, not guarantees, and they refer to one cleaner's labour hours. For a team, divide the hours by the number of cleaners and allow a little room for coordination. Older Prague flats may also need extra time for double windows and awkward corners.

For a regular visit, I assume the home has been maintained. The cleaner handles the bathroom, reachable kitchen surfaces, dust, mirrors and floors. A deep clean adds skirting boards, switches, stubborn buildup and neglected corners.
An empty property is not automatically quick. A nearly bare one-bedroom in Vinohrady once looked easy in the photographs. Then we saw the oven and limescale baked onto the shower screen. Five expected hours became almost nine, without windows.
Post-renovation work needs a separate estimate. Fine dust settles again after wiping, while grout, paint spots and tape add hours. Photographs or a short visit reveal far more than floor area.
What adds more time than square metres
Floor area indicates how much floor needs attention, not the work sitting on it. A minimalist 50 m² flat may be quicker than a crowded studio.
The usual time multipliers are:
- belongings on counters, shelves and floors that must be moved carefully;
- dried kitchen grease or heavy limescale in the bathroom;
- pet hair in fabrics, under furniture and along skirting boards;
- a long gap since the last thorough clean;
- awkward access or delicate materials that need slower treatment.
List windows, blinds, the oven, fridge and cupboard interiors separately. An oven might take 45 minutes or two hours. Six double windows in Žižkov are nothing like six simple modern ones.
Sorting consumes time too. A cleaner cannot know whether a receipt is rubbish or important. If you expect decluttering, say so; cleaning and organising are different services.
How to prepare a better brief before booking
Four to six photographs and direct answers usually produce a useful estimate. Share images only with the household's consent and keep personal papers out of frame.
Copy this short form into your enquiry:
- Layout and approximate size: for example, one-bedroom, 52 m².
- People and pets: two adults and one dog.
- Last thorough clean: one month ago, six months ago, or “I’m not sure.”
- Type of service: regular, deep, end-of-tenancy or post-renovation.
- Non-negotiable priorities: bathroom, floors and greasy kitchen surfaces.
- Extras: windows, oven, fridge, cupboard interiors or balcony.
- What can be skipped if time runs short: perhaps the study or inside the fridge.
- Access and restrictions: no lift, paid parking, a delicate surface or a sleeping child at a set time.
Separating essentials from optional tasks prevents guesswork if the buildup is worse than expected. The bathroom, kitchen and floors come first; the balcony can wait.
When an hourly rate is misleading
An hourly rate does not reveal the bill or result. An experienced cleaner may do more in four hours than a beginner in six. Speed alone proves nothing.
For a meaningful home cleaning price estimate, you need the rate and estimated labour hours. Check whether transport, products and equipment are included; windows, ovens and upholstery cleaning are often separate.
A fixed price works only when the scope is clear. “Complete cleaning of a two-bedroom flat” leaves windows, cupboard interiors and walls open to interpretation. If the hours look unusually low, ask for the task list. The service may simply be narrower.
How to set up future visits after the first clean
Nothing beats timing the first appointment in the actual flat. Afterwards, the guessing stops. You know how long this home took, which order spared needless backtracking and whether that innocent-looking shower screen swallowed an extra hour.
Note the labour hours, what was completed and what still bothered you the next evening. That becomes the core of future visits. One home prioritises bathrooms and floors; another, pet hair and bed linen. Ovens and windows can rotate.
If regular cleaning still takes too long, try a shorter interval or narrower routine scope with a longer seasonal visit. Treat the first estimate as a draft and edit it using evidence from the home.
