How to prepare for a house cleaner without wasting paid time

Jak se připravit na úklidovou službu a neztrácet placený čas

If you are wondering how to prepare for a house cleaner, the answer is not to clean the flat first. Make it accessible. A polished sink does not help much; a kitchen counter buried under post, mugs and chargers can consume ten paid minutes before anyone reaches the surface underneath.

Do not clean before the clean; prepare the space

The distinction is practical. Vacuuming, mopping, dusting and scrubbing the bathroom are cleaning jobs. Picking up cups, moving charging cables off the floor and putting children's bricks in a box are preparation. You are paying for the first group. The second group gives the cleaner room to do it.

I often see two opposite reactions before a first visit. One client spends half an hour attacking limescale because they feel embarrassed. Another leaves bank letters, headphones, keys and receipts across the dining table, expecting the whole surface to be wiped. A cleaner cannot safely guess what belongs in which drawer.

That caution is sensible. A child's drawing may resemble scrap paper. Medication should not be placed with cosmetics, and a letter from the bank should never disappear into a random cupboard. Faced with a crowded surface, a careful cleaner lifts each object, wipes a small patch and returns it. The process is slow, and the finish is rarely as even.

Small obstacles add up. Five minutes in the kitchen, another five in the bathroom, then time spent walking around toys. During a three-hour visit, half an hour can decide whether there is time for skirting boards, doors or a thorough pass over the sofa. Recurring home cleaning works best when ordinary work surfaces are reachable. They do not need to look like an empty property listing.

A ten-minute routine before the cleaner arrives

One quick circuit is usually enough for an average flat. Set a ten-minute timer and touch only the things that block a hand, vacuum hose or mop. Do not start polishing.

Kitchen and living room

Put dishes in the dishwasher or collect them in one agreed place. Clear food, paperwork and small electronics from the worktop. The kettle, coffee machine and fruit bowl can stay. Remove used glasses and personal items from the coffee table. Decorations may remain if your regular arrangement includes dusting around them or lifting them carefully.

Bedrooms and children's rooms

Put clothes in the laundry basket, on the bed or in one labelled bag. The important bit is getting them off the floor. Toys can go into a box; nobody expects Lego to be sorted by colour. If changing bed linen is part of this visit, leave the clean set visibly on the bed and mention it as an extra task.

Bathroom, hallway and floors

Move jewellery, razors and medication away from the basin and bath edges. Towels can stay on their hooks. Put shoes along one wall or inside the shoe cabinet, and lift bags off the floor. In a narrow Žižkov panelák hallway, one gym bag can block half the route for a vacuum cleaner.

Store cash, jewellery, medicines, work documents and delicate objects separately. This is not an accusation. It prevents misunderstandings and ordinary accidents. Lock sensitive papers away or place them in a drawer that has been clearly marked as out of bounds.

If you need a short checklist to prepare your home for a cleaner, use this one:

  • dishes and food scraps away from the sink and worktop;
  • clothes, toys, cables and bags off the floor;
  • private papers, medication and valuables stored safely;
  • clear access to the areas that matter most;
  • clean linen left out if the bed is to be changed.

What you should definitely leave for the cleaner

Do not vacuum, mop or polish the bathroom to make a good first impression. That is the work you booked. Crumbs under the dining table, pet hair on the sofa and dried water marks around the tap can stay. Seeing the flat in its normal condition helps the provider divide the available time honestly.

Do not hide the awkward spot either. A client in Vinohrady once placed a laundry basket over a darkening shower joint before the first visit because she was embarrassed by it. The cleaner only heard about the problem afterwards. It became a priority next time, when they also discovered that an ordinary bathroom product would not be enough. Useful information beats appearances.

Avoid applying chemicals just before the appointment. Pouring a product into the toilet or spraying the shower without telling anyone can create a safety risk. Some products must never be combined, especially chlorine-based cleaners and acidic products. If you have already used something, share the product name and location. Better yet, let the person doing the work choose the method.

Window cleaning, the inside of an oven or fridge, ironing and cupboard organisation are not automatically included in every visit. Confirm the scope in advance. You do not need to finish excluded jobs yourself; the point is to estimate the visit properly and bring suitable equipment.

Share priorities without writing an instruction manual

A list of twenty requests can turn a three-hour appointment into a plan nobody could complete. Three desired results work better. For example: a bathroom with the limescale removed, a sofa vacuumed after the dog, and a properly mopped kitchen floor. If time remains, the cleaner continues with the standard scope.

Separate the standing agreement from one-off work. Your usual routine may cover the bathroom, kitchen, dusting, vacuuming and mopping. This week you add the microwave interior or the balcony door. The provider should not have to reread the operating manual for your flat before every visit.

A short message is enough:

> Today's main priorities are the bathroom, dog hair on the sofa and the kitchen floor. Please follow the normal routine as well. Could you also wipe the balcony door? If it will not all fit into three hours, skip the bedroom this time.

If you will be out, attach one photograph of an unusual area. Not an album of twenty close-ups. A photo showing a mark on a particular cabinet or the location of fresh linen removes more uncertainty than a long paragraph. When naming an extra priority, also say what can be skipped. Otherwise, it is merely another task rather than a genuine priority.

Agree once at the first visit, then share only changes

Allow a little extra handover time for the first appointment. Walk through the flat once and keep it practical. Show where supplies, bin liners, the mop and vacuum are stored if the provider will use your equipment. Test the keys. Explain the alarm, building entrance and parking situation; in central Prague, finding the right courtyard door or legal parking can waste a surprising part of an appointment.

Discuss pets too. A friendly dog can repeatedly cross a wet floor, while a nervous cat may escape into the shared hallway. Explain whether the animal will stay in one room, whether the balcony may be opened and where its bowl should go. Those are safety instructions, not housekeeping trivia.

Point out surfaces that need special care: untreated timber, natural stone, brass, matt kitchen fronts or older parquet. Name anything that should not be moved. “Please leave the record player and the papers on the right of the desk alone” is more useful than “be careful in the study.”

After the first two visits, give brief feedback. Say what worked and what should move higher next time. Once recurring home cleaning has settled into a routine, there is no reason to repeat the key instructions, surface notes or standard scope. Report changes only: a child staying home ill, a new alarm code, one extra task or a room to skip.

Preparation is not a rehearsal clean. It is ten minutes of decisions that turns paid hours into a cleaner bathroom, kitchen and floor instead of a session spent relocating belongings.
