Pre-Christmas cleaning 2026: when to book and what to order in October

Žena vysává koberec ve světlém moderním obývacím pokoji.

Pre-Christmas cleaning is easier to arrange before Advent starts filling everyone’s calendar. Your home does not need to be spotless in October. October is for reserving enough time, agreeing on the jobs that will last and avoiding the scramble for a final December slot. Vacuuming, bathrooms and the last kitchen wipe can wait until shortly before guests arrive.

Why October is the right time to plan pre-Christmas cleaning

During an ordinary week, moving a booking by a day is often possible. December is different. Many Prague households ask for the same two weeks, the same morning hours and, ideally, the day before family arrives. Cleaners still have the same number of hours in a day. Add windows and ovens, and fewer bookings fit into each week.

An October booking does not require a final list of every shelf to be wiped on 17 December. Separate the reservation from the confirmed scope. At first contact, give the floor area, location, likely duration and slowest tasks. Confirm the final priority list in late November. The provider can then reserve real capacity rather than a vague “whole afternoon”.

Book particularly early if your home is over 100 square metres, you have young children or pets, or you want upholstery and window cleaning. Access matters too. A central Prague flat with no lift and difficult blue-zone parking needs more planning than a small flat next to a metro station.

A sensible 2026 Christmas cleaning schedule is simple:

  • reserve a December date in October;
  • confirm scope, transport, equipment and price by late November;
  • report small changes three to five days before the visit, rather than adding half a day of work.

What to book in October and what can wait until December

Book early jobs that are not repeated every week and will stay reasonably clean: windows and frames, a heavily greased oven, cupboard tops, radiators, blinds and textiles. Carpets, mattresses and sofas need drying time. The Friday before a party is a bad moment to learn that nobody can sit on the sofa until Saturday afternoon.

Windows are usually better in November or early December. Frost, wind or heavy rain can force a change of plan, so leave some slack. An oven can also be done early if it will not handle several rounds of Christmas biscuits afterwards. If December is your main baking month, clean it after the busiest week.

I once watched a family in a Vinohrady 3+1 flat try to fit windows, oven, bathroom, kitchen, doors and a stained sofa into one visit. On paper, it was “a deep clean”. Six hours later, they had to choose between finishing the windows and finishing the bathroom. The cleaner was not slow. The list was too long.

Leave fast-returning dirt for the last visit: vacuuming, mopping, reachable surfaces, bathroom, mirrors and the final kitchen wipe. In a home with a dog or toddler, paying for a perfect floor on 5 December makes little sense if guests arrive on Christmas Eve. Skirting boards and cupboard tops, by contrast, normally survive one thorough clean.

One long visit or two shorter ones?

One long appointment works for a smaller, regularly maintained flat without wet textile cleaning. It is easy to organise and involves one travel charge. The problem starts when the list grows after arrival. The cleaner then has to rush or leave items unfinished.

Two visits are often more realistic for a larger home or a family with children and pets. A November appointment can cover windows, oven, detailed bathroom work, doors and textiles. A shorter visit a few days before guests arrive can focus on floors, dust, sanitary areas and kitchen surfaces. The flat does not need to remain museum-clean for a month, but it is ready when it matters.

Ask yourself:

  • How many people and animals will be at home before Christmas?
  • Will you be baking, bringing in a tree or preparing a guest room?
  • Does the job include windows, upholstery or another slow task?
  • Does the mess keep returning?

If it does, regular November cleaning plus one extra December visit can be better value than a single pre-holiday deep cleaning. A steady routine prevents a backlog. The final visit becomes a finish, not a rescue operation.

How to write a request that can be priced properly

“Please quote for complete pre-Christmas cleaning” is not enough to estimate time or cost. For one person, complete means floors and a bathroom. For someone else, it includes cupboard interiors, windows, an oven and five beds. Both expectations are reasonable, but they are many working hours apart.

Include your Prague district, approximate floor area, number of rooms and bathrooms, current condition and priorities in order. Give one preferred date plus two alternatives. Say whether the cleaner should bring products, a vacuum, steps or an extractor.

Photos help with ovens, shower screens, windows and stains. You do not need to photograph personal papers or a whole child’s room. One close-up and one wider view are enough. Mention natural stone, waxed wood, matt cabinet fronts or another sensitive finish.

A useful holiday cleaning booking request can still be short: “78 m² 3+1 flat in Prague 7, one bathroom. Priorities: five sets of windows, oven, bathroom and floors. The home is maintained regularly and we have a cat. We need a date between 14 and 18 December; please bring products and a vacuum.” That description leads to focused questions instead of guesswork.

Prices, seasonal extras and cancellation terms

Time, difficulty and logistics are the real cost drivers. Burnt-on oven grease, many small window panes, heavy limescale and pet hair in upholstery add work. So does carrying equipment to an address with no nearby parking. A label such as “Christmas package” tells you little. Ask what is included, how many hours are reserved and what happens if the job is larger than described.

Before confirming, check whether you are paying an hourly rate, a fixed price or both. Confirm transport, parking, products, equipment, the number of workers and the reserved time window. Ask which tasks cost extra.

A fixed price only works with a fixed scope. If more windows and cupboards are added on site, either the price or priority list has to change. Agree that before the extra work starts, not while discussing the invoice.

Read the cancellation terms as well. Replacing a December job at one day’s notice can be difficult. Fair terms say when you may move the booking without charge, what fee applies and what happens if the cleaner is ill. A seasonal surcharge should also connect to something concrete, such as weekend work, urgent booking, extra staff or difficult transport.

What to prepare before the cleaner arrives

You do not need to clean before the cleaner comes. Make the target areas accessible instead. Put floor toys into a box, stack desk papers and move dishes from the sink. Paid time can then go into grease, dust and sanitary cleaning instead of deciding where a charger belongs.

Mark priorities simply. A small “please do not clean” note on a sensitive cabinet is more useful than a speech at the door. If you will be out, explain access and key return. Arrange a safe room for a dog or cat if needed. Not every cleaner is comfortable beside a loose dog, even one the family calls “completely friendly”.

Parking deserves its own message in Prague. Carrying a vacuum, steps and an extractor from three streets away takes time. Send the zone number, courtyard access details or a clear warning that no space is available.

Keep five or ten minutes for a walkthrough at the end. Check the agreed priorities and raise concerns straight away. The walkthrough is not the moment to add an oven, balcony and second bathroom “while you are here”. New work needs a new agreement on time and price.

For practical help without an undefined seasonal package, send Čistýkout a no-obligation cleaning enquiry. Include the home size, Prague location, priorities and a few possible dates. A precise request usually produces a more precise offer and a calmer December for everyone involved.
