If you searched for spirit vinegar vs white vinegar, you probably expected a quick substitution rule. Here is the catch: either term may refer to a clear vinegar made from alcohol, but the name alone does not tell you its acidity. White spirit, meanwhile, is not vinegar at all. It is a petroleum solvent. A careless translation can turn a harmless descaling tip into damaged stone, softened varnish or a room full of solvent vapour.
Four similar names, four different products
In a Czech supermarket, kvasný lihový ocet means fermented spirit vinegar: alcohol has been converted into acetic acid. The familiar brownish version is usually coloured with caramel. A product sold as bílý ocet is clear, which makes it more convenient for cleaning because it does not carry that colouring. Clarity does not guarantee strength, though. The acidity printed on the bottle still matters.
The Czech label “white vinegar” covers more than one kind of product in everyday speech. One bottle may be food-grade vinegar at an ordinary table strength. Another may be cleaning vinegar, and a third could be a concentrate that must be diluted. Two clear bottles are not automatically interchangeable.
English is not much tidier. Spirit vinegar describes vinegar made from distilled alcohol. White vinegar usually describes a clear vinegar and distilled white vinegar is a common North American label. Depending on the country and manufacturer, these can overlap. So, is spirit vinegar white vinegar? Often, in terms of origin and appearance. Not necessarily in acidity or intended use. Read the actual label rather than treating the nouns as a chemical specification.
The dangerous outlier is white spirit. The UK Health Security Agency defines it as a flammable mixture of petroleum hydrocarbons, also known as mineral spirits, Stoddard solvent, paint thinner or turpentine substitute. People use it to thin coatings and clean paint brushes. It is not acetic acid in water, and it does not belong in an all-purpose household spray.
Read the concentration before you dilute
A social post that says “mix one part vinegar with one part water” has left out the most useful number. Equal volumes of 8% vinegar and water make roughly a 4% solution. Start with 10% vinegar and the result is about 5%. Use a 20% concentrate and you end up near 10%. Same ratio, very different exposure for your hands, eyes and worktop.
Look for acetic acid content, total acidity or a percentage on the packaging. If it is a formulated cleaning product, check its technical or safety information too. Words such as natural, cleaning and extra strong are marketing. They do not replace the percentage or the directions.
For straightforward dilution, C1 × V1 = C2 × V2. To make 500 ml of a 5% working solution from 10% vinegar, use 250 ml of vinegar and add 250 ml of water. The calculation is easy. The judgement is harder: it still does not tell you whether 5% acid is suitable for a particular tap finish, grout sealer or appliance gasket.
Wear the protection specified on the bottle. With stronger products, that will commonly mean suitable gloves and eye protection, especially while pouring. Open a window, avoid creating a fine mist, and label any working solution with its contents and strength. Never store it in a drinks bottle. That mistake is far too easy to make in a shared Prague flat.
Where vinegar helps, and where it causes damage
Vinegar can loosen mineral scale on acid-resistant surfaces. Some glazed ceramic sanitary ware and suitable glass are familiar examples. Remove ordinary soil first, keep contact time modest and rinse afterwards. “Leave it overnight” is not a badge of thorough cleaning; it is often just uncontrolled exposure.
Keep vinegar away from marble, limestone and travertine. Acid reacts with carbonate-rich stone and may leave a dull, etched mark that no amount of wiping will remove. Cement grout, unfinished wood, waxed or oiled finishes, some aluminium parts and rubber components may also be vulnerable. Inside a kettle or coffee machine, the problem may be a seal or metal part you cannot see. Follow the appliance maker’s descaling instructions.
I once saw a pale ring on a stone counter in a Vinohrady flat, perfectly matching the bottom of a drinking glass. The owner had placed a vinegar-soaked paper towel over a mark after watching a short video. The mark stayed. The stone around it became etched, and professional refinishing was the only realistic repair. More vinegar would only have widened the damage.
My check has three layers: the cleaner label, the surface manufacturer’s instructions and a small trial in a hidden spot. Even the spot test has limits. Repeated acid exposure can weaken a finish when one brief test appears harmless. If you cannot identify the material, skip the homemade mixture.
The most dangerous translation error: white spirit
The mix-up looks plausible on a small screen. A reader sees white and spirit, translation software guesses “white alcohol” or “white vinegar”, and the context disappears. Yet a British instruction saying “remove the residue with white spirit” may be discussing adhesive, wax or fresh paint residue. An American guide might call a related product mineral spirits.
White spirit is a task-specific solvent. Use it only where the product and surface instructions expressly allow it, in the small quantity and conditions stated on the label. Vapour can be inhaled, liquid contact strips oils from skin, and the product is flammable. A solvent-soaked cloth also needs disposal according to the label and local hazardous-waste rules. Do not add it to vinegar, water or another cleaner.
If you have already used the wrong bottle, stop. Remove ignition sources if you can do so safely, leave a heavily contaminated room and ventilate in line with the product instructions. Do not pour on water, vinegar or detergent in an improvised attempt to “neutralise” the solvent. For eye or skin exposure, swallowing, dizziness, coughing or breathing trouble, follow the safety label and contact a poison centre or medical service. Ask the surface manufacturer about the material before trying another chemical.
A safer decision process for an online cleaning recipe

- What is the exact original name? White spirit, spirit vinegar and white vinegar are not synonyms.
- What does the ingredient information say? Vinegar should point to acetic acid and water; white spirit points to petroleum hydrocarbons.
- What is the concentration and intended use? Ignore a 1:1 ratio if the starting strength is missing.
- What is the complete surface system? Check the tile, grout, sealant, finish and gaskets, not only the visible top layer.
- Could another chemical still be present? Rinse and ventilate as directed before changing products.
Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach or a cleaner containing sodium hypochlorite. Acidifying hypochlorite can release toxic chlorine gas. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people never to mix household bleach with other cleaners and to provide good ventilation. Vinegar and baking soda are a different case: the familiar fizz mostly shows an acid-base reaction consuming both ingredients. Foam by itself is not proof of extra cleaning power.
Sometimes the safest homemade recipe is no recipe. For expensive stone, metal you cannot identify, electronics, coated furniture or a stubborn residue, choose a product approved for that specific material.
