Wondering how to clean blinds without leaving a row of bent slats behind? Start dry, check what they're made of, and keep one hand under the slat while the other hand wipes. That's the short version. I once watched someone in a Prague 7 rental hold an aluminum slat by its edge and scrub the middle. The grease disappeared. The crease didn't. Since then, I have trusted a soft brush and an old sock far more than any gadget promising a five-minute miracle.
Why clean blinds matter at home
Run a white cloth over the blinds in a flat near a busy Prague road. It will probably come away grey, sometimes slightly sticky. Slats catch ordinary dust, pollen and kitchen grease. Tilting or lifting them disturbs some of it, so cleaning the blinds makes sense when somebody at home reacts to dust or pollen. Waiting until spring usually backfires. Old dirt needs more rubbing; more rubbing means scratches, marked cords and bent aluminum. A quick pass now and then is boring, yes. It is still better than spending Sunday afternoon attacking six months of grime.
Material first: aluminum, wood and fabric
Before reaching for water, look for a care label. Blind makers use different lacquers, glues and fabric treatments. No label? Try the cleaner on the hidden end of one slat and wait for it to dry.
Aluminum blinds
Aluminum can take a damp cloth. What it cannot take is pressure in the wrong place. Close the blind against the window or support each slat from below. Wipe along its length, without tugging at the edge. Of all the aluminum blinds cleaning tips, this is the one I repeat: never scrub the unsupported middle.
Microfiber is enough. The rough side of a kitchen sponge may leave fine scratches that only show when the afternoon sun arrives. Chlorine and strong alkaline cleaners are unnecessary too. Water with a little mild washing-up liquid handles most household dirt.
Wooden blinds
Keep real wood and bamboo almost dry. I start with a microfiber cloth or the vacuum brush at its lowest setting. A sticky fingerprint may need approved wood cleaner, but put it on the cloth, not on the blind, and dry the spot straight away. Never put wooden slats in the bath. They may swell, lose their finish or dry crooked.
Fabric blinds and pleated shades
Use low suction and follow the folds. Keep a hand behind the fabric so the nozzle does not stretch it. Blot small marks with mild soap on a barely damp white cloth. Scrubbing usually spreads the mark. Some treated fabrics should not meet water at all, which is why the care label wins this argument.
Steam or hand cleaning?
Steam feels efficient. It also combines heat, moisture and pressure, three things that can upset glue, lacquer, wood and treated fabric. Unless the maker explicitly permits steam, leave it alone. Hand cleaning takes longer, but you notice trouble early and can stop.
Cleaning blinds without removing them
First close the slats. Vacuum with a clean brush attachment, low suction, top to bottom. Turn them and do the other side. Regular dusting of window blinds keeps loose dust from becoming grey paste once a wet cloth touches it.
Then try the sock method. Pull a clean cotton sock over your hand, dampen it with water and one drop of mild detergent, and hold a slat gently between your fingers. Change or rinse the sock when it turns grey. A dirty sock does not clean; it relocates the mess.
Those multi-pronged microfiber combs are useful on a wide window, provided you rinse the sleeves often. Wipe the top rail and accessible cords with a dry cloth. Do not spray liquid into the lifting mechanism. If it grinds, read the maintenance instructions or call the supplier instead of experimenting with cooking oil or a random garage lubricant.
How often is enough?
Every two to four weeks works for an average flat. A kitchen blind or a window facing the magistrála may tell a different story. Check the cloth after one swipe. If it is already dark, clean sooner. A careful damp wash once or twice a year is normally plenty when the dry routine is doing its job.
Bathtub cleaning for heavy grime
The bath is not a universal shortcut. Use it only for removable horizontal aluminum blinds when the manufacturer's instructions allow immersion. Wood, fabric, motors and enclosed controls stay out. Take a photo of the brackets before removal; it saves an absurd amount of head-scratching later.
Protect the bath with a towel. Use lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent, then leave the blind for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not scrub a folded stack of slats. Rinse gently and lift the blind with both hands so its wet weight does not pull on one end.
Dry every slat and the cords with clean cloths. Prague water often leaves pale mineral marks, so drip-drying is disappointing. Mistakes that are hard to undo
- Pushing on the unsupported middle of an aluminum slat leaves a crease.
- Scouring powder and rough sponges scratch coatings.
- Hot water can deform plastic parts; steam may affect glue and lacquer.
- Spray aimed at the headrail carries moisture inside the mechanism.
- A bath ruins wood and can damage unidentified fabrics.
Vinegar and lemon juice appear in countless cleaning tips. I don't use either by default on blinds. Acid may react with a particular finish, and you rarely know exactly what coating the factory used. Mild detergent is easier to control. With any shop-bought product, read the label, put it on the cloth and test that hidden corner first.
When professional cleaning makes sense
One kitchen window is a manageable nuisance. A glazed balcony, winter garden or eight designer blinds is a project. Add a ladder and the calculation changes again. When asking about professional blind cleaning, name the material and ask whether the quote includes removal, drying and rehanging.
Some removable systems can be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. The process reaches narrow spaces without somebody rubbing every slat, but it does not suit every blind. A decent provider checks the construction and the maker's instructions before dismantling anything. Ask how they will dry and test the system afterward.
